An altogether mesmerizing and haunting instrumental collaboration between the film and concert hall composer Peter Scartabello and the metal and folk recording artist Greg Aaron, Canticle’s self-titled album transports the listener into a wraithlike world overflowing with visions of pastoral landscapes and otherworldly, deeply atmospheric folk horror.
Hypnotic, brilliantly layered and off-kilter acoustic and electric guitar melodies are combined with everything from glorious e-bow drones, bowed string arrangements, bells, dark synthesizer underpinnings and dynamic drum accompaniments. The overall sound is unique: effortless in its ability to masterfully swing from exquisite medieval folk stylings to tight progressive rock compositions to deeply cinematic electronic tones and crystalline soundscapes.
Canticle’s sound is fantastic in its power to evoke legendary progressive and folk bands such as Comus and Goblin while also occupying a sonic world reminiscent of eternal film scores such as Marc Wilkinson’s “Blood on Satan’s Claw” as well as Paul Giovanni and Magnet’s “The Wicker Man.” On this release, Scartabello and Aaron have achieved a sound world of maximum expressiveness, extraordinary musicianship and stunning sonic innovation.
