Say what you like about St Etienne, they’ve got longevity – and that’s become the most charming thing about them. It was in 1990 that the trio’s cover of Neil Young’s Only Love Can Break Your Heart popped out of North London, but surely even they would have admitted that the idea of still making records nearly
a quarter of a century later was preposterous.
But endure they did, going on to make albums that coolly ignored Britpop, grunge, big beat, the garage rock revival and whatever other monikers befell British indie in the interim. The quality of their releases remained high throughout, with even chanteuse Sarah Cracknell’s solo work finding a loving home on St Ett completists’ CD shelves.
This 2,000-only fan-friendly hardback follows their photoshoots around all their major periods, depicting a group who knew exactly how they wanted to look – certainly the sum of their parts and influences, but always combining into
a kitsch identity that was resolutely St Etienne.
