One of our favourite labels here at Psilowave HQ, Virtual Records is the creation of label owner and luminary of Ambient music Matt Hillier, one of the most psychedelic, creative and accomplished artists working in the Ambient genre today. Recording under the name “Ishq” (literally – “love”) with long time partner Jacqueline Kersley, Matt had a formidable catalogue of sublime releases already under his belt for some of the biggest Ambient labels of the 90’s such as Interchill, Aleph Zero and Dakini before launching the Virtual Imprint in 2005.
The last decade has seen Virtual grow exponentially, with releases not only by Matt who is highly prolific in his various guises but has also introduced us to artists such as Sinepearl and Experiments In Silence. In the process Virtual has become a parent to several sub-labels including Virtual Space, Virtual Light and Virtual World, with each offshoot focussing on a different style, but with every release clearly carrying the Virtual “sound”. Sometimes cold and distant, sometimes warm and lush, often synthetic and cosmic, the constant to all Virtual releases is the sense of the “Other” an immersion into worlds at once connected yet paradoxically estranged from the here and now. Seriously psychedelic music for the serious listener!
Based in picturesque Cornwall, Virtual specialise in mesmeric unfolding soundscapes with many releases designed specifically for horizontal listening on headphones. All titles are extremely limited CD releases strictly for the ambient elite and quickly become highly sought after collector pieces!
